During the internship, the focus is on the following domain-specific learning outcomes (NVAO, 2012) and objectives. The professional bachelor of nursing

autonomously builds up a professional relationship with the person requesting care within a multicultural environment, aimed at the somatic, social, psychological and existential wellbeing of this person, both in familiar and in unfamiliar and/or complex care situations.

          Takes into account the needs, feelings and context of the person requiring care based on verbal and non-verbal communication.

          Communicates with the user and his social network with an active listening posture in complex, urgent and/or changing situations.

          Adapts the content and form of a conversation to the care context in complex, urgent and/or changing situations.

          Analyses his own verbal and non-verbal communication and makes adjustments where necessary.

          Maintains a balance between distance and proximity in the relationship with the person seeking care.

          Builds up a professional relationship of trust with the person seeking care and then acts as an enterprising advocate.                              

Provides evidence-based and theoretically sound nursing care based on clinical reasoning and an attitude of responsibility, ample initiative and proactivity, in accordance with general and professional legislation.

          Acting in a thoughtful manner, seeking timely advice.

          Provides nursing care based on a sense of responsibility and in accordance with general and professional legislation.

          Independently formulating a scientifically based nursing care plan in complex, urgent and/or changing situations and reviewing this with the nurse.

          Pro-actively searches for relevant data from the client's file, handovers and team meetings.

          Independently and in a structured manner adds observations to the data to be collected.

          Observes the caretaker before, during and after the care, examination and/or treatment.

          Makes connections between observations, illness, care and therapy, reactions and perspectives of the person requiring care in complex, urgent and/or changing situations.

          Identifies nursing diagnoses/problems on the basis of links between relevant data, illness, care and therapy, reactions and perspectives of the person requiring care.

          Determines concrete objectives based on own clinical reasoning, according to the treatment vision of the department and in consultation with the user.

          Imparts clinical reasoning, nursing interventions and any follow-up action based on acquired knowledge and evidence based practice.

In both simple and complex specialised care situations, providing client-centred and personalised nursing care, using appropriate technology and with attention to structure, punctuality and accuracy, so as to ensure the quality of care and the safety of the client in the concrete actions.

          Provides accurate and relevant information to the user on current care, health problems, examinations and treatment in complex, urgent and/or changing situations.

          Carries out nursing interventions and medical prescriptions correctly, responsibly and in a well-considered way in accordance with established procedures and protocols and makes informed decisions. Can demonstrate this in complex, urgent and/or changing situations.

          Acting in accordance with basic nursing principles (hygiene, sterility, comfort, privacy, self-care and participation, safety, ergonomics, economy and ecology) in complex, urgent and/or changing situations.

          Evaluating the care provided, looking for causes of non-achievement of goals and reviewing conclusions with the nurse or team.

          Based on the results of evaluation and consultation, they should make adjustments, identify opportunities and make new proposals.

Takes, from a vision on empowerment and shared decision making, autonomous initiatives on prevention and applies these adequately at all levels.  Organises methodically health promotion and patient education to individuals and groups.  Stimulates health-promoting behaviour in the person(s) seeking care.

          Appoints all relevant health risks and defines the right priorities in consultation with the patient and his social network (shared decision making).

          Stimulates independent health-promoting behaviour based on all relevant recognised health risks.

          Motivates self-reliance and compliance and can justify this on the basis of knowledge and insight (empowerment).

          Provides appropriate education with regard to health, welfare and autonomy to the care recipient and his social network, evaluates and adjusts the education undertaken.

          Independently refers (after consultation) to other care providers in the context of prevention and health promotion.

Is aware of the values and norms of themselves and the client and how these influence professional practice as a nurse.  Acting in an ethically responsible manner. Acting as an example to others.

          Analysing their own behaviour in relation to their values and norms and discussing this with others.

          Taking into account and anticipating the norms and values of the person being cared for.

          Has a basic attitude of empathy (listening, empathy, non-judgmental, understanding, ...).

          Respects privacy, professional secrecy and the rights of the person requiring care.

Monitors and promotes the quality of the individual and overall care provision within his/her organisation.

          Provides care according to the criteria of quality of care: effective, efficient, safe, just, timely, continuous, multi- and interdisciplinary, client-oriented, according to the legal regulations and scientifically substantiated.

- There is a strict sequence with the OPO Clinical Education because of safety during the internship and the risk of harm to people: the student must have obtained a credit of the OPOs clinical education from phase 1, phase 2 and phase 3 before clinical education phase 4 can be started and takes the majority of the OPOs of phase 4 simultaneously OR credits have already been obtained from the OPOs of phase 4.

- In the event of non-tolerable theoretical shortcomings in stage 1 and/or 2, the student cannot commence an internship in stage 4.

- Subject to the results in EP 1, the internship may possibly start in semester 2 of phase 4.

There is a mandatory attendance for the indicated activities. Absences must be justified with a valid certificate within 24 hours after absence.

The OPO Clinical Education is a non-tolerable OPO.

Evaluation internship

An interim and a final evaluation are drawn up. This evaluation is done by means of daily feedback forms, which can be filled in by nurses, mentors or internship supervisors during work or learning supervision. All needed documents can be found on the internship portal.

The sheets of the mid-term and final evaluation are drawn up by the internship supervisor.

At the end of each internship, the student downloads the complete PDF of the final evaluation (without signature) and makes it available on the provided link. This serves as proof that the student has read the sheet.

The management of the internship portal, including timely follow-up, is the responsibility of the student.

Students pass the OPO KO if they have achieved the indicated minimum level for all DLRs.
