Neonatology (B-TM-Z11643)

Aims
- Explains the examinations, observations and concerns regarding fetal / neonatal well-being, at the end of pregnancy, during parturition, initial examination and daily care.
- Explains concepts and terminology related to perinatology and perinatal epidemiology and can provide examples for clarification.
- Describes the physiological adaptation of the fetus at the end of pregnancy and the neonate that takes place in the vital systems during the transition from intra- to extra-uterine life.
- Describes digestive abnormalities in a newborn and knows the points for attention and uses of different formula foods applied to the individual baby.
- Discusses the most important inborn errors of metabolism and can provide clear professional information about this to the parents.
- Appoints the care for sleep to the neonate, can provide professional information to the expectant parents with regard to safety and cot death.
- Knows the development of newborns up to the age of 2.5 years and can clarify using examples.
Previous knowledge
To be admitted to the first year, candidates must have a certificate of secondary education issued by the Flemish, French or German communities of Belgium. These certificates give access to all forms of higher education. For candidates with only a foreign diploma, a proficiency level of the Dutch language is required, issued by a recognised language institute. Content
The course Medical aspects focuses on anatomy, physiology and biochemistry in the specific situation of transition from intra- to extrauterine life and in the first neonatal period. In connection with the OPO Anatomy and Physiology Part 1, it lays a thorough foundation for the midwifery approach of the neonate.
Next content will be discussed:
- Teminology around 'perinatology' and perinatal epidemiology'.
- Examination of the unborn child (at the end of pregnancy)
- The fetus at the end of pregnancy
- Neonatal adaptation: transition from fetus to baby
This is the key chapter in which all the important physiological adaptations necessary for the transition from intra- to extrauterine life are discussed:
o Initiation of respiration
o Circulatory changes
o Thermoregulation
o Metabolic adaptation: regulation of glycemia
o Maturation of the gastrointestinal tract
o Physiological icterus
o Moisture: physiological maturation of the excretion system
o Haematological changes: blood formation, blood coagulation, immune system (incl. vaccination policy in the infant)
- The medical examination of the newborn
In the part Nursing and midwifery aspects we distinguish on the one hand the direct care after birth with the following content:
- Furnishing the neonatal care room
- Apgarscore
- Observation of vital functions
- Thermoregulation and use of heat sources
- Caring at the navel stump
- Neonatal examination by the midwife
On the other hand, this part also looks at care within the neonatal period with the following aspects:
- Nutrition of the newborn: bottle feeding, observation of digestion. Breastfeeding is discussed extensively within the OPO Normal postpartum.
- Hygienic concerns
- Observation of growth
- Early detection of metabolic abnormalities
- Collection of a urine sample
- Prevention of cot death
- Preferred postures and prevention of plagiocephaly
- Psychomotor development of the young child

The lectures of the OPO Neonatology are divided into Knowledge, Experience and Skillslabs. (K, E or S Labs)
- A K lab is a college in the entire classroom group.
- An E lab or an S lab takes place in small groups.
There is also the possibility to participate in the monitor.
It is necessary to be well prepared for each lesson. What is expected of you by the next lesson is described in the phase book and in the course.
