Biochemistry practicals (B-TM-Z11100)

Aims
Learning objectives:
The student can apply scientific information and knowledge in a well-considered way in order to guarantee a high-quality functionality.
The student is able to execute (= preparing and measuring) laboratory analyses accurately, reliably, critically, systematically and efficiently and is able to operate and manage technical installations and apparatus adequately.
The student notes, collects and processes results in a well-considered and critical way in order to reach significant and complete conclusions.
The student communicates both orally and in writing adequately to the teacher as well as to the co-student in order to ensure an optimal flow of information.
The student is familiar with the specific safety, environment-technical, hygienic and deontological principles or aspects regarding working in a medical, bio(techno)logical or pharmacological laboratory and can apply the relevant regulations correctly.
The student t can formulate work schemes and plan them chronologically and can execute these work schemes within a reasonable period of time.
Previous knowledge
- skills acquired in the lab of (analytical) chemistry and microbiology
- knowledge of organic chemistry, analytical chemistry and biochemistry

2. Determination of cholesterol in egg yolk
3. Enzym kineticks: alkaline phosphatase
4. Enzym kineticc: cellobiase
5. Isolation and determination of the glycogen content in liver and muscle tissue
6. Protein determination
7. Size exclusion chromatography and "the protein purifier"
8. Cell culture: cytotoxicity assay
9. PAGE – Western blot: determination of fish proteins
10. PCR: genetic modified food
11. Enzym Linked Immuno Sorbent Assay (ELISA)
12. Hemagglutination (HA) en Hemagglutination inhibition (HAI)
Course material
Study cost: 11-25 euros (The information about the study costs as stated here gives an indication and only represents the costs for purchasing new materials. There might be some electronic or second-hand copies available as well. You can use LIMO to check whether the textbook is available in the library. Any potential printing costs and optional course material are not included in this price.)
Course:
Huygens A., (2010), Labo Biochemie, non published course, Thomas More, Geel
Information for students on Toledo
Language of instruction: more information
This course will be given in flemish.
Format: more information
Realisation: Depending on the duration of the experiment, one or two practical sessions will be performed in group during one lab. The student makes a preparation based on questions in the textbook and preliminary calculations.
Concrete learning: Students look for the background of the biochemical techniques performed in the lab, based on information given during the theoretical courses, information in the textcourse and the world wide web. Students apply this knowledge in the lab, execute the practical work accurate and precise, participate active and work in group.
Timing: The contact moments are weekly during a period of 10 weeks, unless otherwise communicated.
Organisation & guidance: During the contact sessions, students work independently in the lab. During the lab, students get the theoretical and practical background information regarding the principles of the new applied biochemical techniques and the student can ask for additional information to the lecturer.
Evaluation
Biochemistry practicals (B-TM-Z81100)
Explanation
Assessment | Grading scale |
---|---|
TOTAL | 1-20/20 scale |
To be able to pass for this course, 4/5 of the lessons should be followed, despite legal or unlegal absence.
The permanent evaluation is based on individual preparation, logbook, oral reporting, attitude and skills. Critical errors are the creation of insecurity, manipulation of results, theft and/or vandalism, no logbook or a very incomplete logbook. A score of less than 10/20 on one of the aspects of the permanent evaluation, as well as a critical error can result in a not achieved credit.
Information about retaking exams
This course unit does not allow partial mark transfers.
Students that fail the first examination chance, keep 70% of the exam quotation of the first examination chance and perform a theoretical test for the remaining 30% in the second examination chance. In this test several aspects (calculations, principle, report ...) of the performed experiments will be examined.
